Before it can read anything
AutoScan is software. It talks to your car through an ELM327 adapter that plugs into the OBD2 port under the dashboard — USB for a laptop, Bluetooth for a phone or tablet. We no longer sell hardware, so buy whichever adapter you prefer; AutoScan works with any of them.

The ECU Tuning Pack and the ECU Repair & Diagnostic Training Guide are add-ons that work with any edition. Both are already included in ULTRA and ULTIMATE.

The difference is mostly library, not features: 300 GB of ECU software against 4 GB, the full dump database, and 400,000+ remapping files. If you do not need the library, ULTRA does the same diagnostic work for a quarter of the price. We would rather say that than sell you the wrong one.
