Edition 01

AutoScan Standard

Read the fault code. Understand it. Clear it.

The warning light is a number, and the number has a meaning. AutoScan Standard pulls that number out of your car and tells you what it stands for in plain English, on your own Windows laptop, in about two minutes.

What it does

Included in this edition

  • Read stored and pending fault codes on any OBD2 vehicle, whatever the badge
  • Plain-English descriptions from a 14,309-code database — not just "P0420"
  • Clear the code and reset the dashboard light once the fault is fixed
  • Check whether a code has come back after a repair, before you pay anyone else
  • Lifetime licence key · personal use · 1 year of software updates

Not in this edition

  • Live sensor data while the engine runs
  • Freeze frame — the conditions when the fault hit
  • ABS and airbag (SRS) diagnostics

These arrive in AutoScan Enhanced, at £49.99.

Before it can read anything

You will need an ELM327 adapter

AutoScan is software. It talks to your car through an ELM327 adapter that plugs into the OBD2 port under the dashboard — USB for a laptop, Bluetooth for a phone or tablet. We no longer sell hardware, so buy whichever adapter you prefer; AutoScan works with any of them.

Already own one from another tool? Use it. If not, the guide below covers what separates an adapter that works from one that goes back.

Questions

Before you buy

Will it work on my car?

If your car is petrol and was first registered from 2001, or diesel from 2004, it is OBD2 and AutoScan can read it. That covers almost every car on a UK road. The trial will tell you for certain before you pay.

What is the difference between Standard and Enhanced?

Standard reads and clears codes. Enhanced adds live sensor data, freeze frame, MOT readiness monitors and ABS/airbag diagnostics — it tells you why the code was set. If you only want to know what the light means and turn it off, Standard is enough.

Do I need anything else?

Yes — an ELM327 adapter to connect the car to your laptop. AutoScan works with any ELM327; we no longer sell them, so buy whichever you prefer. There is a short guide below on what to look for.

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once and the licence key keeps working. The year of updates covers new software versions; the software you have does not stop working when it ends.

AutoScan Standard

One car, the occasional warning light, and no wish to pay a garage £50–£120 to plug in a reader and read you the answer.
